Important News

I am delighted to announce that as from Monday June 23rd 2014, my film based sports photography archive (with the exception of my Gymnastics images) has been acquired by the agency Popperfoto. It is gratifying for me to know that my life’s work has found a good home and I am very appreciative of the support I have received from Bob Thomas and his staff.

In future all enquiries regarding these images (which comprise everything I photographed between 1978 and 2003, with the exception of Gymnastics events) should be made directly to Popperfoto who now own the copyright and all other rights.

A new cycle

A new cycle.

“Be equal to your talent, not your age.”

The year following an Olympic Games is always an interesting one in any sport as new talent begins to emerge onto the Senior scene and established competitors strive to maintain their hold on the sport.

This was particularly true of the 2013 British Gymnastics Championships, held at the Liverpool Echo Arena from March 22nd to 24th. The event incorporated the Junior Women’s Championships as well as the Under 16 Youth and Under 18 Junior Men’s events. Staging the event in a major arena gives these young gymnasts a great experience of competing on a podium in front of a large audience; this is invaluable as they move up to compete on the International scene.

2012 was a memorable and outstanding year in the history of British Gymnastics and the unforgettable performances of both our teams at the Olympic Games will live long in the memory.

2013 sees the beginning of a new Olympic cycle and whilst some senior gymnasts have now retired from competition, others are aiming to continue competing at the highest level. Significant amongst these are male gymnasts Daniel Keatings and Theo Seagar, both of whom narrowly missed Olympic selection but who have overcome their disappointment and are working for this year’s major events. They both achieved excellent results in Liverpool taking five apparatus titles between them and were rewarded with selection for the forthcoming European Championships in Moscow.

The Senior Women’s event was significant as several gymnasts enjoyed their first showing competing as seniors, having impressed last year at Junior level. Interestingly two of these gymnasts outshone the opposition to take the Gold (Gabby Jupp) and Silver (Charlie Fellows) medals. Niamh Rippin (another gymnasts who narrowly missed Olympic selection) took the bronze.

The Junior Women’s competition saw Tyesha Mattis taking the all around title following on from her outstanding success in this year’s Australian Youth Olympic Festival where she held off world wide competition to become overall champion. Close behind her came promising young gymnasts Amy Tinkler and Ellie Downie (sister of senior gymnast Becky Downie).

Fresh from her success Down Under, Tyesha Mattis (East London) wins the British Junior title.

The Men’s under 18 and under 16 competitions saw a clutch of outstanding gymnasts taking the limelight with Nile Wilson, Dominick Cunningham and Jay Thompson on the podium in the under 18 event and Brinn Bevan, Gianni Regini-Moran and Hamish Carter impressing everyone in the Under 16 competition.

It was impressive to see that talent is so wide spread thought the UK with no one club dominating the scene. From Scotland to Wales to all areas of England, clubs are producing great talent and the level of coaching is impressively high.

There may have been a bitter wind blowing from the Mersey throughout the three day event but competition was hot and fierce inside the arena. Established stars found themselves under pressure from the new kids on the block and the youngsters responded to the challenge by competing like veterans. 2013 sees both European and World Championships on the calendar and we can confidently hope for a continuation of the great results achieved in recent years.

Ever since the closing of the Games I have wanted to produce a photographic tribute to all those involved – not only the gymnasts and coaches but also all those who made the Games happen – officials, Games Makers, spectators, families. This book is my tribute to them all and I hope it will be a constant reminder to them of their great achievements.

The above quote was at the forefront of my mind during a busy summer working at the Olympic and Paralympic Games. These must have been the most photographed Games ever with keen photographers amongst the spectators at all the events and a colossal number of photographers accredited to work there officially. Amongst this number were some great sports photographers – of all ages – and it was inspiring to see the work they produced. It is all too easy to allow yourself to become psyched out by this but at least experience has taught me that you need to focus on yourself, challenge yourself and always try to produce images that are better than the last set. My Olympic and Paralympic  efforts can be viewed on my website:-

For the time being I am not posting images here on my blog and have in fact made previous postings ‘private viewing’ only. Sadly the reason for this is that I have had a steady increase in the number of images removed and reused, all without permission and all in spite of the previous postings I have written about issues surrounding copyright infringement and image theft. If I can come up with a secure way of posting my images, I shall review the situation but for the time being the public viewing is turned off.

However I have recently published all these postings from 2009 until 2012 in a new, moderately priced book which is available in printed version or as a cheaper e book. The title is:-

“Where Sport Meets Art – A Collection of Blog Postings between 2009 and 2012 “.

Just in time for Christmas, I have written and published a children’s story – and with no sport at all!

I hope that these publications will be of interest to all who love sport and photography as well as those amongst you who might have a weakness for teddy bears – or know someone who does!

British Gymnastics – The Road to 2012

I am pleased to announce that, just in time for the Queen’s Jubilee and the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games, I have published a new large format photographic book titled ‘British Gymnastics – The Road to 2012’.

The front cover design for ‘British Gymnastics – The Road to 2012′

During my thirty five years of involvement with British Gymnastics I have always intended that at some stage I would create a tribute book which would publicise the great work and achievements of our gymnasts and coaches during my period of photography. In keeping with Olympic year, this book focuses on the Olympic disciplines of Gymnastics (men’s and women’s Artistic, Rhythmic and Trampoline). It is a large format (12”x12”), 120 page book with 485 photographs – colour and black and white. Whilst there are pages featuring gymnasts from the past, the main focus is on the current generation of stars and their preparations for the 2012 Olympics are recorded in a chapter with unique behind the scenes training images. Here are some sample pages; at the end of the posting is a URL link which goes straight to details of how to view further information of the book (including a Preview and purchasing). Please note that in addition to the quality large format coffee table hardback version, it is possible to buy the book as an e book for viewing on iPads and iPhones – a modestly priced alternative.

A double page spread of images of the British Junior Men competing at the 2012 European Championships in Montpellier.

A selection of generic images of the hands and feet of gymnasts during a training session.

Text in the book has been supplied by Vera Atkinson and John Atkinson MBE and I am privileged to have such knowledgeable and experienced people involved in the project. I trust that the book will be a suitable photographic tribute to the great people I have known in British Gymnastics – and a valued memory for anyone who loves the sport. The book is also available as an e book and here is the link:-
